From Sanctuary to Studio: Celebrating 13 Years of RMD Luxury Window Treatments

A story of creativity, independence, and the power of beautiful spaces.

There isn’t a career test that predicts “curtain maker,” “workroom owner,” or “artisan of custom window treatments.” But for Rebecca Munster, the path to becoming one of the region’s most respected makers began long before she ever touched a bolt of fabric professionally.

It began in a small bedroom with a single window.

Finding Beauty in a Difficult Beginning

Rebecca grew up in a home filled with instability, and her childhood bedroom became her refuge. It wasn’t large, but it was hers — and its small window overlooked a Bartlett pear tree that burst into white blooms every spring. For a young girl seeking peace, that window represented possibility, safety, and beauty.

Birthdays and holidays weren’t spent asking for toys. She requested lamps, artwork, bedding — anything that could make her space feel intentional and comforting. Red became her signature color, and she learned early how a well-chosen accent could completely transform a room.

During high school, while working at a craft store, she unknowingly stepped deeper into her future. Every aisle was filled with materials waiting to become something meaningful. She learned to value custom craftsmanship long before she knew it would define her career.

The First Window Transformation

When her family moved and she suddenly had to share a plain rental bedroom with her sister, Rebecca saw a challenge — and an opportunity.

The room was white, lacking molding, personality, and warmth. The mini blinds did nothing for the space. Using her craft-store discount, she bought paint, ribbon, and masking tape. What followed was her first true window transformation:
• A hand-painted border to mimic window trim
• Bed skirts reinvented as fabric swags
• Color, character, and creativity brought to a room that had none

With paint and leftover fabric, she discovered the power of dressing a window. She didn’t know it then, but that moment planted the seed for what RMD would one day become.

A Career Reinvented

Years later, after a successful career in IT and project management, life presented Rebecca with a pivotal moment. Pregnant with her youngest daughter and ready to build a life on her own terms, she chose to leave the corporate world. It was a bold, self-directed decision rooted in autonomy, creativity, and purpose.

What began as small projects — pillows for neighbors, refinished furniture, simple reupholstery — quickly grew. Soon, the basement filled with clients’ pieces. Word of her work spread. Her craftsmanship stood out.

And slowly, the calling became clear:

Window treatments were not just a service — they were her signature.

The Emergence of RMD

As Rebecca connected with fabric vendors and designers, custom window treatments moved from occasional projects to the heart of her craft. She understood instinctively how a window could shape an entire space — how light, softness, scale, and silhouette could transform a room from ordinary to extraordinary.

Then 2020 arrived.

The 2020 Turning Point

The world shut down, and no one knew what would happen next.

But something unexpected occurred: people turned inward. Homes became sanctuaries, offices, classrooms, and safe havens. The demand for comfort, beauty, and meaningful spaces surged.

The pace was intense, the challenges constant, but this season solidified what would become The RMD Way — a structured, client-centered process built on clarity, craftsmanship, communication, and care. It became the backbone of how RMD engages clients and delivers consistent excellence today.

Building the Workroom

In 2021, RMD took a major leap forward: securing commercial space in town and opening the first official workroom.

What began as a one-woman endeavor now had a home — and a future.

Today, that workroom spans three specialized studios, each dedicated to a different part of the craft. RMD now operates with:

✔ A four-person artisan team skilled in advanced fabrication
✔ A full-time installer whose precision brings every design to life
✔ A structured process that blends engineering, math, design, and couture-level workmanship
✔ A reputation for solving problems and creating highly custom, highly technical products weekly

The systems, the artistry, the team, and the culture all reflect the same values that started in that childhood bedroom:
Beauty. Safety. Creativity. Transformation.

Thirteen Years Later

Thirteen years after its founding, RMD Luxury Window Treatments stands as one of the top custom soft furnishings workrooms in the DMV — a company built on craftsmanship, trust, and the belief that a well-dressed window can elevate an entire home.

What began as a personal sanctuary is now a sanctuary-creating business.

What started with ribbons and leftover fabric now includes motorization, engineering-level measurements, pattern matching expertise, artisan drapery, and one of the strongest workroom teams in the region.

And the most exciting part?

RMD is just getting started.
